Overview of course:

CONGRATULATIONS on choosing German, a language of worldwide importance and vehicle of a rich culture and history. A solid knowledge of German will give you many benefits throughout your life--some of which may become apparent only later on.

This course assumes no prior knowledge of German. You will learn basic vocabulary and structures that will give you a good start in using German for interpersonal communication, research (including Internet use), travel, reading and scores of other applications. You will also learn about cultural aspects, including everyday life, of German-speaking countries that will help you when you travel or study there!

Remember: MU now has an exchange program with the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena, Germany! You need to take four semesters of German before going. See Dr. Holtman for details about this and other study opportunities in German-speaking countries. And take time to meet and hang out with Jaimee Shearer, Mike Gamble, and Elizabeth Friedle, all of whom spent a fabulous semester in Jena on the exchange. We are also happy to welcome another student to Mansfield this semester from Jena: Sandra Rutz. Get to know her and the other German speakers you may meet on campus or off! They will make your study of German into something real and usable.
