A Description
of the Mansfield University / Volgograd State University
Exchange Program in Russia
Fall Semester, 1997
Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad, is a large metropolitan area extending almost 70 km along the banks of the Volga River in southwestern Russia. Volgograd State University, established in 1980, consists of approximately 10,000 students enrolled in 26 departments taught by approximately 275 professors and lecturers.
Students who enroll in Mansfield's program at Volgograd are accompanied by a Mansfield University professor, live in a VSU student residence hall, and attend classes in Russian language, history, literature, and culture. These classes are taught by Russian professors. Placement of students in classes is dependent on their language experience in Russian and can vary from beginner to advanced levels. Students can earn 12-15 credits from Mansfield University. Students can receive letter grades or petition for pass/fail grades for these courses.
Additional excursions to Moscow and St. Petersburg may be included in the program. Optional excursions to other areas in the region will be made available to students.
Applicants must submit 2 references from professors, a transcript indicating achievement of at least 2.5, and a completed application for the Russian exchange program by March 1 of the year prior to departure.
