RUSSIA IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Offered by Professor Alexander Kubyshkin, director of the Volgograd State University American Studies Center, and by Assistant Professor Ivan Kurrilla

An interpretive survey of Russian history in the twentieth century, this course emphasizes the major political, social, economic, and cultural developments of the period. Modern Russia is viewed in the context of controversies between state and society and between national interests and ideological imperatives. Emphasis is also given to the origins of the Russian revolution, the Soviet totalitarian state, destalinization, perestroika, and current trends in Russia.

FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR

Offered by Assistant Professor M.V. Kosova

A short-term grammar course for beginners, this offering provides practical knowledge of Russian language basic structures and active vocabulary at the level of day-to-day comprehension. Close attention is therefore given to comprehension, wording the content and expressing the meaning. Assignments are designed to facilitate communication in Russian.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION AND PHONETICS

Offered by Assistant Professor O.A. Prokhvatilova

This course has three goals for American students: (1) understanding Russian phonology, (2) overcoming accent, and (3) developing listening comprehension skills. Special attention is given to Russian pronunciation phenomena that present difficulties for English speakers.

ORAL COMMUNICATION

The main goals of this course for American students are to introduce them and help them adapt to the Russian social-cultural language context and to develop listening and comprehension skills. Students will become acquainted with such matters as set expressions, forms of speech etiquette, conversational formulas of greeting, apologizing, thanking, and congratulating.

RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE

Offered in English this course focuses on central themes in contemporary Russian life and culture. It provides background for understanding such topics as Russian relations with the former USSR republics, inflation, taxes, cultural traditions, and education.
