A General Description
A Popular Place To Study
Volgograd State University is a modern higher education institution founded in 1980. At present it has twenty-nine departments grouped within six "faculties" or divisions: Philology, History and Philosophy, Law, Economics, Mathematics and Physics. The University enjoys the benefits of its large world famous city environment and its access to the Volga --the most beautiful river in the European part of Russia. Since the year of its foundation Volgograd State University has provided higher education services to meet the needs of individuals and those of society at regional, national and international levels promoting excellence in education and research. Being a new type of University it offers distinctive programs along with a wide choice of traditional courses. The average age of the staff is 38, which enables the University to develop dynamically and keeps it open to innovations. Within the last two years the new specialties, such as World Economics, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Regional Studies were introduced. The University is actively engaged in research: it has four Boards that confer the Degree of Candidate of Sciences (corresponding to the US Ph.D. Degree) in Linguistics, Economics, History and Philosophy.
The University is only a forty minute bus ride from the center of Volgograd and its residence hall is a ten-minute walk from the classroom buildings. Students are accommodated in rooms for two or three with all modern conveniences. There are kitchen facilities on every floor.
Programs
Today Volgograd State University offers 23 undergraduate and 24 graduate programs in these areas:
Russian Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Translation and Interpretation, World History, Archeology, Russian History, Regional Studies, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Management, Accounting and Auditing, Finance and Credit, Environmental Economics, Theoretical Economics, World Economics, Political Economy, History of National Economy, National Economy Management, Law, Social Work, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Theoretical Mechanics, Radio Physics, Electronics.
The programs are offered to about 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarly research is conducted in many fields including: comparative studies of the Russian and French languages, verb formation in the Russian language, history of religion, ethnic and cultural identity of the Lower Volga population, the 19th century countries of North and South America, Russian Chinese relations in the 17th 18th centuries, international relations in Eastern Europe in the 20th century, the history of Russian public thought in the 19th century, social philosophy, transformation and development of the national economic structure, business administration, market transformation, economic analysis of world models of privatization, transformation of property relationship in Russia, tactics and methods of crime investigation, human rights in legal practice, ecology, social law, numeric modeling in mechanics and continuous media, stochastic integral equations, asymptotic methods for solving ordinary differential equations, complex computation.
Exchange Programs
Volgograd State University currently participates in eight inter university exchange programs and the Transeuropean Program on Cooperation on Higher Education TEMPUS TACIS. So far more than 500 international students from Austria, China, Germany, South Korea, USA, and other countries have studied at our University. We welcome applications from international students whether they are currently living in Russia or abroad. The VSU Russian program gives you the opportunity not only to study Russian but to be a part of Russian culture. It combines practical and theoretical aspects of philological studies with diverse courses on Russian literature, history and philosophy while encouraging interaction with the community and application of your academic skills in a Russian native speaking environment. The programs may range from two weeks to five years, the latter may result in receiving a diploma from VSU. We pride ourselves on the attention given to the individual needs of our students whatever their cultural background.
The International Office of the university is a research and educational center providing facilities for international cooperation, realization of scholarly projects and fostering contacts between students, teachers and researchers of various countries of the world. It also works out social and recreational schedules for international students. Volgograd has five theaters, among them the New Experimental Theater and the Cossack Theater . There are several art galleries, a concert hall which houses the celebrated Volgograd Symphony Orchestra conducted by A. Serov and dozens of local historical museums.
