Intro to General Psychology Online-
Advice from Past Students

Instructor Note:
At the end of the course students are asked to volunteer advice to future students.  These are actual student comments collected at the end of the class (you can see more on our D2L discussion forum area).  In some cases I have shortened the comments or corrected spelling/grammar. I have not otherwise altered the spirit or language of the students comments.

"[This class] was a lot of work..but overall it was a good experience. Thumbs up to the teacher for all the work that went into creating these lessons".

"This class turned out to be more difficult than I had anticipated. I really enjoyed doing the Fill-In-Blank exercises because they helped me to read through the material. The one thing that I didn't like about this class were the deadlines. I occasionally felt rushed, but that was my fault because I tended to put things off til the last minute. I definitely recommend that you get things done early so that you can take your time and get it right the first time. Good Luck!"

"This is a fun and informative class. The discussion board really helps students get a grasp on the material. The fill in the blank exercises are also a helpful tool in studying for exams. This is a tough class and requires alot of time and effort. I have put many hours of time in reading and studying. The biggest advantage of taking this class is that you somewhat determine the speed of your progress through the class. You can always work ahead when you have time. Overall, I would definitely take this class again and I will highly recommend it to other peers".

"I felt this course was very challenging.I have taken other 100 level on-line courses that were a breeze compared to this.  PS. I felt Dr. Craig was very good to work with and always understanding and helpful when needed".

"It's not as easy as it sounds, but it's worth it. I have learned a lot in this course. It is definitely time consuming. You have to have the patience and dedication to devote if you are going to take the course and succeed. I have to admit that this was my first online course. Other people who have taken classes this way always told me how easy they are, but in this case they are far from wrong [sic]. The course was rather involved. The amount of information that you learn through reading the chapter, doing the fill-in-the-blanks, the discussion boards and weekly tests exceeds the information you learn in most six week courses.

"Be kind to each other. The responses [on the discussion boards] are intended to add a little something to the post, not to criticize writing style."
"Plan your essays well and give constructive yet friendly feedback to other students and the professor."

"Since this is an online course, you need to know your computer. I have taken four other classes online besides this one and have never had problems with my internet and getting things done on time. This time however, I did. In other words, don't think that computer problems won't happen to you, because I did. Be prepared for problems!!
Also, get your work done early! It's a lot easier to write an essay that you get to pick from, rather than one you get stuck with! Take the time to make them good! It's helpful to everyone else if you do."

"This class requires work! But don't let that discourage you. The work you do will help you get so much out of the class. I really learned a lot in this class just by doing the work. Which is how a good classroom, or e-classroom in this case, runs "

"Don't procrastinate on the DB posts. Waiting to the last minute narrows your selection, and there's usually a reason that people didn't post to that question!!

"My advice to future students taking this on line course is to relax. Everyone at one time or another may experience a computer problem..mine was a doozie. Doctor Craig is really fair and will help you through. Also, I found the FIB quizzes were a really good way to study and become familiar with the information. I really learned alot in this class and I enjoyed it. Also, read all of the discussion board essays. It helps to hear someone else put information into their own words...sometimes makes it simpler to understand. Good luck.

"To all you who want to take this class in the future I have some important things for you to think about. First off this is a great class and I learned way more here then I did in the classroom. That is a plus. But here is my list of reason to take this class and not take this class.
Reasons to take....
1. If you are an organized person with time management skills.
2. If you have about 10 free hours a week to work on this class.
3. A computer that works well!!

Reasons not to take this class....
1. If you are a poor test taker and hate having a time limit!!!"

"I have a few pieces of advice. The first is read. The second is read. The third is READ.

"If I could give any one student advice it would be to really stay ahead of things. The class its self wasn't that hard but if you didn't really read the test were very difficult"

"I think my advice would be the same as most, DON'T GET BEHIND!!! It's so much easier to stay on top of things than it is to let it slide. It's a great course and you'll learn lots if you keep yourself up to date with the readings, posting, and FIB's!

"This course was a lot of work; between quizzes, tests, postings and reading. The most important thing I found was to WORK AHEAD! I would have to force myself to sit down and work ahead, so I didn't get bogged down with work. Dr. Craig was easily accessible and responded back to e-mails within a short period of time. His class was great!

"Like i said if i had a nickle for everytime i said i was going to start the online homework early i would be in reality a hundred dollars richer. You must not procrastinate in this course or else you will definitely put the screws to your own grade. Dr. Craig gives you ample time to get things started early take advantage of it. When his syllabus says something im going to say its always 100% right. So you better do what it tells you to do. Other then that there is nothing else to say except study, be on time, and read everything twice!

"I'm going to be honest with you - this class is tough. I've always had a problem with time management, so setting my own deadlines was a bit rough. But Dr. Craig breaks things down so you take it one step at a time. If I can say anything though, it wouldn't be stay ahead (although doing that will help you) but do the Fill in the Blank Exercises! You can take them as many times as you want, so take them until you get 100%. (I got 100% on all of them, so I know it's possible) It'll help your grade out so much!!!

Also, don't wait until the last minute to do your dicussion board posting. If you do, you'll get stuck with a topic you might know nothing about (trust me - it happened to me!). (Although, that probably goes along the same lines as staying ahead, so that is something to think about too.)

"The best advice I could give is if you have the chance work ahead. If you do this it makes the class much easier to understand and gives you time to do better work.

"I liked to highlight important vocabulary words and names while I was reading that way they poped out at me when I went to study and during FIB quizes.

Do the concept checks as you read the chapter. They only take a few minutes and they'll help you apply what you just read. Not only will it give you a better understanding about what you understand about what you just read, it will help you to remember the information.

Write down the days that assignments are due on a calendar or planner that way you won't get dates and assignments confused

"A piece of advice for any students who will read this and are new comers to this course - read your syllabus! Everything you need to know is right there in black and white. Dr. Craig keeps you well aware of what is expected. Reading the chapters in great detail and reviewing fellow classmates post is essential to do well on the exams. Take your time on the FIB quizzes and you will do well. Good luck to you!

"I am not going to start this by stating the obvious. As a college student, you should already expect that a class such as psychology is not going to easy. Everybody else has said "say ahead." Well, if you are like me then you do your work and get it in on time. I never worked ahead because I felt that I didn't have to. The one piece of advice that I am going to give relates to the Discussion Board Postings. If you want a good grade, then you MUST be complete and accurate with your postings. Do not just copy what the text states. Research your topic and make it clear and concise. There is a noticeable difference in people who just "slap something together" and those who put some time and effort in. If you make the added effort, your hard work will pay off in the end.

My only piece of advice for taking this class would be to stay ahead of the syllabus by one to two chapters. Also Dr Craig responds back to your postings and email very quickly. He is also very fair with his students

Be interested in the subject, or at least try to be. If you're not, you probably won't read and you will fall behind.
Stay ahead of the game! You never know when your computer might crash and you need a few days to get it back up and running!

READ THE TEXT BOOK! I do not like reading! I don't read for pleasure, I only read when I have to, like a text book. And even that I would skim through. If you do not read the text book or if you just skim through it, then you will not do well in this class. You have to read, and even highlight important things to go back to and study them for the exam.

Also make time for reading! I did this online class, and another online class at the same time while working two jobs and it is hard to find time to do the work. Especially do not wait untill the night before, or up untill the hour before something is due, work ahead if you can!!
