Teaching Philosophy

I believe in the concept of the "life-long learner" and am committed to teaching students how to think about content -critically, creatively, and constructively; to express their ideas and opinions - clearly, accurately, and passionately, and to research the unknown - carefully, systematically, completely.   I am committed to bring to a class knowledge, enthusiasm, openness, tolerance, creativity, and humor.

As an educator, it is my responsibility to see that course goals, experiences, assignments, assessments, and class climate are conducive to learning.   I am responsible for keeping current in both my discipline (psychology) and profession (teaching) and for ensuring that the content of my courses is current, accurate, and presented in an objective manner.

I have the obligation to critically evaluate my own teaching style, course content, and relationships with students in order to improve my ability to enhance other's personal and professional development.  I am responsible for continuing my own personal and professional development.  I serve as a role model and am responsible for my behavior as it reflects on my self, my university, and my profession.

As a person in a position of authority and power in relation to my students, I am particularly sensitive to issues which may have the potential for abuse of that power and authority.  I am responsible for being sensitive to the diverse backgrounds, personalities, learning needs & styles, educational goals, and current life stressors which may effect students' optimum performance in my courses.

For me, being an educator is more than just "teaching"- it also involves playing a meaningful role in the personal and professional development of those individuals who have chosen to learn from me.  For me teaching is as much about the relationships I have with students as it is about the content I teach.  Students and I have the right to be treated with respect and consideration by each other.
