CANs List Curriculum Action Notice

From: Academic Affairs Committee Date: February 17, 2000
This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Please forward any comments or concerns to Bill Yacovissi, Elliott Hall 113-A, ext.4764, wyacovis@mnsfld.edu.
The Provost has proposed changes to a number of academic policies which are listed below and also attached as ACADEMIC POLICIES.doc [in original e-mail]. Mostly the proposal adjusts the policies to be consistent with 120 sh degrees. The main issue raised by the proposal is the question of when and how to deal with students who are not performing academically.

ACADEMIC POLICIES

Minimum Academic Standards

Current: see Catalog, p. 45.

"All degree-seeking students, except first semester transfers, must meet the minimum academic standards of the institution. The minimum academic requirements for continuation at Mansfield are:

00-18
19-37
38-56
57+
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
1.00 QPA
1.60 QPA
1.80 QPA
2.00 QPA

Transfer students are subject to academic dismissal after their first semester only if their QPA is less than 1.00. Thereafter, they are subject to the above standards as are all other degree-seeking undergraduates. Credit hours attempted include transferred credit hours."

Proposed

"All degree-seeking students must meet the minimum academic standards of the institution. The minimum academic requirements for continuation at Mansfield are:

00-30
31-45
46-60
61+
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
1.40 QPA
1.60 QPA
1.80 QPA
2.00 QPA

Credit hours attempted include all transferred credit hours."

Rationale:

1. Provide first year students more time and a higher standard.
2. Emphasize progress required during sophomore year to move out of probation before junior year.
3. Align credit categories with the 120-credit standard (as we do with the 40% rule) for all students.
4. Eliminate the distinction for transfer students. Any transfer students who cannot achieve the minimum QPA should either meet with the Academic Review Board or sit out a year.
Academic Probation

Current: see Catalog, p. 45.

Proposed: Add the following at the end of this section.

"Students with a QPA of less than 1.4 during their first semester (attempted credits hours of 18 or less) are automatically assigned to the University Learning Center to participate in the skills program to support them in their efforts to improve their overall QPA prior to completion of 30 credits."

Academic Dismissal

Current: see Catalog, p. 45.

Proposed: - No change.

Class Standing

Current: see Catalog, p. 46.

Proposed: - replace current language with the following -

"Class standing is determined by the total number of credits earned including credits accepted in transfer from other accredited colleges.

Freshman
Sophomore
Junior
Senior
00-30 credits earned
31-60 credits earned
61-90 credits earned
91+ credits earned"

Rationale:

Again, the purpose is to align all standards with credits earned in a pattern consistent with the 120-credit minimum for a bachelor's degree.

Second Baccalaureate Degree

Current: see Catalog, p. 47.

Proposed: - replace the # 1 statement with the following:

"1) a minimum of 30 credits earned at Mansfield following the first degree (internships, observation/participation, and student teaching credit hours are not counted in the required minimum)."

Financial Aid: Minimum Academic Requirements

Current: see Catalog, p. 27.

Proposed:

"There are two standards you must meet to be eligible for financial aid. The first is the quantitative standard: you must earn at least 24 credits per year to be eligible for aid as a full-time student. The second standard is the qualitative standard: you must earn at least the minimum QPA requirement to retain your eligibility for financial aid. The minimum QPA requirements for financial aid are the same as the University standards for minimum academic performance:

00-30
31-45
46-60
61+
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
credit hours attempted --
1.40 QPA
1.60 QPA
1.80 QPA
2.00 QPA

If you fall below these minimum grade point requirements and you are academically reinstated, you will receive one semester of aid on provisional status (if you passed at least 24 credits during the prior year). If you have been out of school for one full year and are readmitted as a regular student by the University Admissions, you will be determined to be making satisfactory progress for financial aid purposes."
