Lots of changes to the Education and Special Education programs

Education and Special Education Curriculum Changes

Program Changes

All Secondary Education Programs:

  • Professional gates policy
  • Change general education requirement APSY 321" to APSY 321 or PSY 290"
  • Changes in Professional Education area of the ER
    (increase of 1 required credit overall)
  • Extensive number and title changes
Elementary Education:

  • Professional gates policy
  • Require all university general education requirements
  • Require students to complete 6 credits in all five general education groups
  • Require PSY 101, Intro to General Psychology
  • Delete all other specific requirements
  • Delete areas of concentration
  • Extensive changes to major and professional education courses
    (decrease of 15 required credits overall)
  • Extensive number and title changes
Special Education

  • Professional gates policy
  • Require all university general education requirements
  • Require students to complete 6 credits in all five general education groups
  • Require PSY 101, Intro to General Psychology
  • Delete all other specific requirements
  • Some changes in the major and in professional education
  • Extensive number and title changes
Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education (dual certification)

  • Professional gates policy
  • Require all university general education requirements
  • Require students to complete 6 credits in all five general education groups
  • Require PSY 101, Intro to General Psychology
  • Delete all other specific requirements
  • Revise the 15 credit early childhood sequence by adding
    some courses and deleting others
  • Extensive number and title changes
Elementary Education and Special Education (dual certification)

  • Professional gates policy
  • Require all university general education requirements
  • Require students to complete 6 credits in all five general education groups
  • Require PSY 101, Intro to General Psychology
  • Delete all other specific requirements
  • Creation of an ER to combine certification programs and simplify advisement
  • Extensive number and title changes
  • 137 credits overall (reduction of 5-7 credits from previously)
Policy Change

  • Restrict education courses taken prior to passing through professional "gates"
  • Establish eligibility requirements for professional courses numbered 250 and higher:
1) Complete at least 45 credits with 2.5 QPA (or current state standard)
2) Pass ED 101, ENG 112, and COM 112 with "C" or better
3) Pass state-recognized standardized examination (such as Praxis I) with at least minimum passing Pennsylvania cut-off score
4) Present evidence of all appropriate PA state teaching clearances being met (Act 34 criminal background, Act 151 child abuse, TB test)
