Academic Affairs Committee

October 12, 2000

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Lynn Pifer. Belknap Hall 05, x4384,

The First Year Course committee oversees the implementation of the General Education Program's First Year Course. Committee members shall be appointed by the Senate Executive Committee based on recommendations from AAC.

Faculty who have demonstrated a significant interest in the course, particularly those volunteering to teach it, will be considered to serve on the committee. Members shall serve a two year term, and terms shall be staggered. Four to six faculty members and one ex-officio, non-voting representative from the Office of Student Affairs shall serve on the committee.

  1. Create or adopt appropriate teaching materials, including discussion questions and lesson plan ideas, for faculty teaching the course.
  2. Work with appropriate programs, such as Faculty Lecture Series and University Film Series to coordinate relevant events.
  3. Develop and monitor a system to track student participation in cultural events.
  4. Recommend policy issues to the Academic Affairs Committee. [Sample policy issues: Should students be allowed to withdraw from this course or take the course pass/fail? What do we do with students who fail to enroll for this course? For students who fail or withdraw? Will transfer students have to take the course?]
  5. Help recruit faculty members to teach the course.
  6. Plan future themes for the course.
  7. Report to the General Education Subcommittee.
