Curriculum Action Notice

From:

Academic Affairs Committee

Date:

September 22, 2000

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Lynn Pifer. Belknap Hall 05, x4384,  lpifer@mnsfld.edu.

The following is a proposed change in the IM2000 General Education Proposal.

Add the following sentence to "Rules for General Education" Rule # 4:

However, students majoring in mathematics will be allowed to complete Block #3 with six hours of courses in their major discipline.

Rationale for change:

The proposed general education plan contains a contradiction. It requires that all students complete the minimum requirement in all five blocks. Thus all students must complete six credit hours in mathematics (Block 3). However, in rule #4 under "Rules for General Education" on page 11(of the final memo from the Implementation Committee) it says "A maximum of four credits from the major discipline may be used to fulfil Distribution Requirements (Blocks 1-5)." It is logically impossible for a mathematics major to satisfy BOTH of these requirements.
