This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Helen Biblehimer, Elliott Hall 203, ext. 4521,

The Art department has requested the following curricular change:

Action: Program Change Proposal : Art Minor with two tracks: Art History Minor & Studio Art Minor

Rationale for change:

The Art History minor would be an important offering at Mansfield University because it would allow students majoring in the related fields of History, English, Liberal Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, Foreign Language (Spanish, French, German) and other fields to bring a focus on visual culture and the social history of art to their related majors. The minor in Art History would bring a much larger interdisciplinary perspective in critical theory as it relates to the disciplines listed above and to visual culture.
The art history minor complements the skills gained by students in their major disciplines by developing historical and cultural interpretation and critical analysis of works of architecture, sculpture, painting, and the allied arts. It is designed to develop and foster historical, aesthetic and multicultural appreciation of art as well as analytical, critical and theoretical knowledge of art.
The Studio Art minor enhances a student's ability toward conceptualization and cognitive development. It promotes creative solutions to problem-solving that could be applied to many interdisciplinary fields. The Studio Art minor would provide a venue for further skill/talent development.
For the Art Education major this experience translates into better teaching skills and classroom safety. The Studio Art minor would enhance the BA in Art History and prepare art history graduates for graduate school with a better understanding of the production of art. The Art History minor would enhance the Studio B.A. by offering an historical and theoretical perspective on the production of art.

List all changes:
Split the current Art Minor into two tracks: Art History Minor and Studio Art Minor.
The Art History Minor would have 18 credits. ArH 101 Introduction to Art is required. The remaining 15 credits are electives taken from Art 300 and any art history.
The Studio Art Minor would have 18 credits. Art 240 (Two-D Design) and Art 244 (Three-D Design) are required. The remaining 12 credits are electives taken from any studio art class.
