This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Helen Biblehimer, Elliott Hall 203, ext. 4521, hbiblehi@mnsfld.edu.

The Art department has requested the following curricular actions:

#1 Action: New Course: ART 2238 Multiculture Crafts

Purpose and Nature of Course: To acquaint students with the world of crafts as it pertains to diverse cultures. To help students develop an interest in creative activities and to tap into the current "crafts revival" that is happening in America.

#2 Action: Course Change: Course Change : Art 1190 Digital Photography

Purpose and nature of change: Change the course numbering of Digital Photography to reflect the prerequisite of junior status.
New Number 3330
Prerequisites: (Courses which MUST be completed prior to taking this course) ___Junior status___

#3 Action: Course Change Request ARE 3343 Arts & Crafts in the Special Education Classroom

Purpose and nature of change: Rewriting the course description to accurately reflect the course content. Changing the name to broaden the scope of populations included.
New Course Title: ___Art For Students With Diverse Needs.
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):An exploration of types of characteristics of children who are special: either gifted, physically/ emotionally disabled, or culturally disadvantaged. Strategies for art experiences in both inclusive & self-contained
classrooms.

#4 Action: Course Change: ARE 3393 - Art Curriculum and Teaching in the Secondary Schools

Purpose and nature of change: Rewriting the course description to accurately reflect the course content, specifically the inclusion of the historical, philosophical and theoretical foundations of art education.
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Provides in-depth experience in lesson plan writing and creating curriculum in art at the secondary level. Students have the opportunity to teach art at an area high school under the supervision of the professor with the cooperation of a high school art teacher. Emphasis is placed upon developing an understanding of motivation and classroom management in preparation for the semester of student teaching.

#5 Action: Course Change: ARE 3390- Art Curriculum and Teaching in the Elementary Schools

Purpose and nature of change: To add a history and philosophy of art education component to the course
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):
Provides an Historical and Philosophical background in art education. Students experience in-depth lesson plan and curriculum writing. Students will observe in art classrooms and will teach K - 8 under the guidance of the professor. Emphasis is placed upon developing methodology for motivation and classroom management in preparation for the semester of student teaching. Must have attained Junior status.
Prerequisite: ARE 2211; Pre or co-requisite: ED 205.

Purpose and nature of change: To better reflect the course content and the level of instruction.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):
Build those skills and attitudes necessary for the remainder of the program. Introduces the two and three-dimensional aspects of drawing and develops personal power of expression. Designed to stimulate creative thinking, develop sensitivity to the art elements, sharpen impressions and the visual memory. Dual listed with 5510.

#7 Action: Course Change: ART 2251 Jewelry

Purpose and nature of change: To better reflect the course content and the level of instruction. New Number ART 3351
Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):Study of two and three-dimensional design Concepts with emphasis on individual solution in the medium of metal. Both precious and common materials will be used. Traditional techniques of jewelry making will be explored.

#8 Action: New Course Request: ART 3338 Multicultural Crafts

Purpose and Nature of the course: To acquaint students with the world of crafts as it pertains to diverse cultures. To help students develop an interest in creative activities and to tap
into the current" crafts revival" that is happening in America. To further students' skills with higher-level activities and to increase decision and problem solving abilities.
Course Description: This is an advanced class in the exploration of a variety of 2-D and 3-D craft ideas from around the world. Projects will span ancient history thought contemporary time &
investigate the importance of crafts in societies. Students will be required to work at an advanced level with a variety of materials and equipment. Prerequisite: ART 2238

#9 Action: New Course Request: ART 5538 Multicultural Crafts
Purpose and Nature of the Course: To acquaint students with the world of crafts as it pertains to diverse cultures. To help students develop an interest in creative activities and to tap into the current" crafts revival" that is happening in America.
Course Description: This is a graduate class which stresses the mastery skills of skills of 2-D and 3-D craft ideas from around the world. Students will be required to work with a variety of materials and equipment and explore the history of crafts. Projects will be researched and designed on an individual basis.

Purpose and Nature of change: To better reflect the course content and the level of instruction.

Purpose and nature of change: To better reflect the course content and the level of instruction.

Course Description: The direction of the course of study is determined by the student and instructor.
Prerequisite: ART 3335. May be taken for 1-12 credits.

#12 Action: Course Change ART 4403 Art Seminar

Purpose and Nature of change: Change credit hours of Art Seminar to reflect new Electronic Portfolio
Requirement. Change from 1-2 cr.
Course description: Art Seminar provides students with the opportunity to further exchange ideas, enhance critcal dialectic, and to participate in activities relevant to professional artist and art educators. In addition, students enrooled in Art Seminar will compile, focus, reflect, and organize their educational experience at Mansfield University into an electron vita and professional portfolio. This course will further prepare art education and art studio majors for either graduate school or professional employment.

#13 Action: Course Change: ART 3302 Advanced Oil Painting
Purpose and Nature of Change: To increase the level of the course.
This is an advanced level course which requires upper level
experience.

Course Description: Direction of the course of study is
determined by the student instructor. Through a variety of
projects, student will explore their personal style and interests.
Prerequisite: ART 3301

#14 Action: Course Change: ARE 2231 Printmaking
Purpose and nature of change: Renumbering course to adequately
reflect the level of work accomplished by taking it.
New Number: 3331
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the processes
of relief, intaglio and planographic printmaking with an emphasis
on their use in creative expression. Prerequisite ART 2240, ART 2248

#15 Action: Course Change: ART 3331 Advanced Printmaking
Purpose and nature of change: Renumbering course to adequately
reflect the level of work accomplished by taking it.

Course Description: This course incudes advanced problems and
processes in woodcut, lithography, serigraphy and dry point intaglio.
Prerequisite: ART 3331

Purpose and nature of change: Change number of ARE 1101 to ARE 2211 to keep the course numbering n line with the year the student is expected to take the class (Sophomore)

Rationale: Insufficient number of faculty to teach this course.
Has not been taught in a very long time.Other program requirements supersede the importance of this course.

Rationale: There is not enough faculty to enable teaching this course. Part of the curriculum is now incorporated into ART 3345 Fibers.

#23 Action: Course Change: ART 5514 Printmaking
Purpose of change: Renumbering course to align with other printmaking course. Rewriting the course description to reflect the course content.

Course Description: The development of a personal aesthetic through the process of woodcut, linocut,photo intaglio etching, lithography, serigraphy, monoprinting and collagraphy. Prerequisite ART 3331

#24 Action: Course Change: ART 5520 Art Seminar
Purpose of change: The additional credit for Art Seminar reflects the additional requirements of an Electronic Portfolio and oral presentation.

Course description: This course was designed to meet the needs of graduate students who are not currently employed as in-service teachers or new graduate students who have not take Art Seminar 4403 as an undergraduate at Mansfield University.Art seminar provides students with the opportunity to further exchange ideas, enhance critical dialectic, and to participate in activities relevant to professional artist and art educators. In addition, students enrolled in Graduate Art Seminar will compile, focus, reflect, and organize their educational experience at Mansfield University into an electronic vita and professional portfolio. Student will be expected to give oral presentations. This course will further prepare Master of Education, Art majors for a career in teaching.

#25 Action: Course Change: ARE 5536 Current trends in Art Education
Purpose of change: To make the title of the course more accurately reflect the content.
Course Description: This course entails an exploration of the History of art education and its past and present Philosophies and Theories. Students will examine how sociocultural forces and events have impacted art education. Current trends and research in art education will be look at in depth.

#26 Action: Course Change: ART 5598 Research
Purpose of change: To add an exhibition requirement to the course and change the name and description to reflect the requirement. To establish requirements for the exhibition, research paper and orals.
New Name: ART 5598 Art Education Research and Exhibition
Course Description: After completion of all required course work candidates for M.Ed. in Art will submit a proposal to their advisor outlining a research topic according to the graduate committee. Candidates will be required to successfully defend their research paper though an oral
examination.Graduate students will also be required to prepare and exhibit their artwork as evidence of their mastery of the studio portion of the discipline.

# 27. Action: Course Change: ARE 5599 Thesis
Purpose of Change: To change the course description to reflect the addition of an exhibition requirement.To establish requirements for the thesis, orals, and exhibition.
New course title: ARE 5599 Art Education Thesis and Exhibition
Course Description: After completion of all required course work candidates for M.Ed. in Art will submit a proposal to their advisor a proposal to conduct original research. Candidates will be required to conduct their research according to the approved proposal and write a scholarly document over their research for presentation to the graduate committee. Candidates will be required to successfully defend their research paper though oral examination. Graduate students will also be required to prepare and exhibit their graduate artwork as evidence of their mastery of the studio portion of the discipline.

Course Description: An exploration of types of characteristics of children who are special; either gifted, physically/emotionally disabled, or culturally disadvantaged. Strategies for art experiences in both inclusive and self contained classrooms.
Prerequisite Ed 2205.

#29 Action: New Course: ART 5530 Digital Photography
Purpose and Nature of Course: It is the objective of this course to accomplish the following: master the advanced techniques of digital photography, achieve of a high level of proficiency in capturing and printing a digital image and cultivate a clear vision of the students artistic voice in digital medium. Historical significance of photography from film to chip and its impact on society will be explored.
Course Description: A course designed to learn the digital camera in acquiring images, in preparing them on the computer for print and in presenting in various formats. This course will sharpen the ability to recognize and develop a personal view of the world though photography.
