The department of Health Physical Education and Recreation has requested the following curricular action:


Action: New Course: HPE 1168 Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers 1 s.h.

Purpose and nature of course. To provide those students who are in the Healthcare, Human Services, Teaching, and Public Services professions, and anyone who is required to take a healthcare provider course for employment, certification in Basic Life Support procedures as prescribed by the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

Course description for catalog :
The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients and victims of accidents in a
wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of -hospital settings. The course is a prerequisite for AHA advanced courses in resuscitation, including advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and BLS instructor
programs.

Describe evaluative techniques. Both written and skill test will be used a means of evaluation. Written tests will include standardized test from the accrediting agencies.

Describe any student enrollment restrictions (prerequisites, co-requisites, limited to Majors in program XXX, etc.) Class size will be limited to 18 due to manikin restrictions
