Curriculum Action Notice

Academic Affairs Committee

November 10, 2002

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Helen Biblehimer, Elliott Hall 203, ext. 4521,

The Department of Chemistry and Physics has requested the following curricular change:

Action: Program Change: BSE Physics

Rationale for change: To reduce credits required for the B.S.E Physics degree programs from 128 to 126. SSHE guidelines permit Professional programs to alter general education requirements to accommodate professional and accreditation requirements. Based on this guideline, the general education requirements have been adjusted to meet the allotted number of credit hours while maintaining alignment with Pennsylvania Department of Education and other accreditation requirements.

List all changes:
Decrease the number of credits required from 128 to 126. This can be accomplished by moving the following required courses to the appropriate general education block: (i) MA 2231 to the Mathematics block, (ii) CHM 1111 and CHM 1112 to the Natural Science block, (iii) MA 2232,
MA 2233, and PHY 2210 to the Gen Ed Electives block, and (iv) PSY 1101, PSY 3321 or 3290, and ED 2205 will fill the Social Science block. HST 2201 or 2202 will no longer be required in the Humanities block.
These changes will require a minimum of 61 credits of General Education course work. It may be difficult for students enrolled in this program to complete the WIG requirements.

The core physics courses (33 credits) would be:

MA 3280 Linear Algebra & Matrix Theory 3
MA 3311 Differential Equations I 3
MA 3312 Differential Equations II 3
PHY 1180 Quantitative Methods of the Physical Sciences 3
PHY 2211 General Physics II 4
PHY 3311 Modern Physics I 3
PHY 3312 Modern Physics II 3
PHY 3313 Physical Mechanics I 3
PHY 3315 Analog Electronics 4
PHY 3316 Digital Electronics 4

Note: the required major and major related courses in General Education and in the physics core are identical to those required for the physics B.S. major.

The core education courses (32 credits) would be:

ED 1102 Introduction to Education 3
ED 3260 Assessment in Education 3
ED 3310 Content Area Reading and Writing 3
ED 3313 Teaching Science in Secondary Schools 3
ED 3320 Observation and Participation - Secondary 3
ED 4400 Student Teaching 12
ED 4460 Professional Seminar 2
SPE 3275 Inclusion of Diverse Learners 3
