Curriculum Action Notice

From:

Academic Affairs Committee

Date:

April 7, 2003

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curriculum actions. Within the next 10 days, please forward any comments or concerns to the AAC Chair, Helen Biblehimer, Elliott Hall 203, ext. 4521, hbiblehi@mnsfld.edu.

The Writing, Information Literacy, and Global Awareness Subcommittee and the General Education Subcommittee has proposed the following:

Action: Change to the General Education requirement for Information Literacy:

Rationale:

  1. Due to the difficulties encountered with advising students we are proposing a simplification of the process so that students will not have to register for "I" courses. Instead, the "I" courses will be built into the curriculum in each program.
  2. To pinpoint information literacy skills that are essential for the major.

List changes:

For the "I" requirement:

  1. Maintain the current number and level of Information Literacy designated courses. (Presently there are three required, two upper division and one lower division.)
  2. The lower division "I" requirement will be satisfied through the requirement of COM 101 or ENG 112 which are graduation requirements.
  3. Each program should include an Information Literacy requirement and designate a minimum of 2 curses in the program that would fulfill this requirement.
