Curriculum Action Notice

Academic Affairs Committee

November 3, 2004

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curricular actions. Please forward any comments or concerns in the next 10 days to the AAC chair, Flor Blanco, Belknap Hall 110A, Ext. 4604,

The Department of Chemistry and Physics has requested the following curricular action:

Course Change: CHM 1102 Organic and Biochemistry

Purpose and nature of change:
Changing the catalog prerequisite for CHM 1102 from "CHM 1101" to "CHM 1101 or permission of instructor" would allow more students to take this laboratory science course. CHM 1102 addresses many aspects of organic and biochemistry, with applications in the world of our experience, in ways that are not strongly dependent on some of the material covered by CHM 1101. Students with some familiarity with chemistry but lacking the explicit prerequisite can be, and have been, successful in CHM 1102. With the current prerequisite, students have no incentive to take CHM 1102 to fulfill the General Education laboratory science requirement. Expanding enrollment is a benefit to students and to the University's General Education program by increasing General Education offerings. From the Department's perspective, seats are available and could be filled.

Course Description for Catalog:
The only change to the catalog's course description is to make the prerequisite "CHM 1101 or permission of instructor."

Prerequisites: CHM 1101 or permission of instructor

List all programs that require this course. Provide support from affected departments.
Both CHM 1101 and CHM 1102 are required by two programs: B.S. Geography, Environmental Science concentration; and B.S. Nutrition and Dietetics. I have discussed this change with Dr. Russ Dodson and Dr. Kathy Wright, both of whom feel it is a reasonable step that would have no impacts on their programs.
