Curriculum Action Notice

From:

Academic Affairs Committee

Date:

November 15, 2004

This is a bulletin from the Academic Affairs Committee concerning proposed curricular actions. Please forward any comments or concerns in the next 10 days to the AAC chair, Flor Blanco, Belknap Hall 110A, Ext. 4604, fblanco@mnsfld.edu.

The following General Education Program change has been presented to AAC:

Proposed change:

Allow individual departments to substitute their Introduction courses for UNV seminar if their proposals are approved by the UNV steering committee.

Rationale for change:

Several departments have expressed interest in offering their Introductory courses as substitutes for the UNV seminar (e.g., Introduction to Biology), and the committee has decided there are some positive reasons to allow this change including:

  1. Students will be clustered by major and may develop a stronger attachment to the University in this way;
  2. Many Introductory courses offer similar content to the required UNV seminar; and
  3. Remaining UNV sections may be better able to address the needs of those students who tend to be less engaged with the University.
