Communication & Theatre Department Program Changes

1. Program Change Proposal Form – BS.BR


Rationale for Change: Change broadcast curriculum to better prepare students for potential careers in the electronic media field.

Add Writing for Broadcast COM 2230 as a required course for broadcast majors increasing the broadcast core from 18 to 21 credit hours and decreasing related electives from 21 to 18 credit hours. Add to required core Electronic Media Programming COM 3311 (replacing Audio Production) or Electronic Media Sales and Management COM 3310.

2. Course Deletion – COM 3350

Rationale for Deletion: Currently this course is offered every Spring. The past two times it has been offered the enrollment was less than 10 students. The course offers students an advanced practicum and instruction in broadcast production. With the low enrollments and the course's structure students are better served by taking a special projects COM 4450 with an available professor. Cancellation of this course frees up resources in order to offer a course in editing.

3. Course Deletion – COM 4404

Rationale for Deletion:
As currently constructed the knowledge and information acquired in this course is redundant to that already received in the two production courses being taught as well as through participation in both the TV Club and WNTE-FM. This class is not required for the major and is considered a related elective. The course is offered in alternating even number years. The last time the class was offered enrollment was low.

4. Course Change Request – COM 2230

Purpose and Nature of Change:
To change the course offering from alternating even number years in the Spring to every year in the Spring Semester. To make the course a requirement for the broadcast major. Currently it is a related course elective for the broadcast major.

5. Course Change Request – COM 3301

Purpose and Nature of Change:
To change the course name and description to more accurately reflect current course content, broadcast curriculum and the electronic media industry. Also changing prerequisites from current Com 2201 and 48 hours of earned credit to COM 2201 or consent of instructor.
Old Course Title: TV Program Design I
New Course Title: Television Production I.
Old Course Description: Study of the theoretical and practical aspects of television program conceptualization, scripting, production, presentation and evaluation. Prerequisite: COM 2201 or consent of instructor. 48 earned credits necessary to enroll.
New Course Description: Introductory study of the theoretical and practical aspects of television production. Topics include studio cameras, scripting, storyboarding, interviewing, lighting and sound. Students will work in groups on assignments and projects for further exposure with the equipment. Active participation in Mountaineer News will be required. Prerequisite: Com 2201, or by consent of instructor.

6. Course Change Request - COM 3304

Purpose and Nature of Change:
To change course title and description to more accurately reflect the course's current content.
Old Course Title: Television Program Design II
New Course Title: Television Production II
Old Course Description: Study of the theoretical and practical aspects of television program conceptualization, scripting, production, editing, presentation and evaluation. The emphasis is on the application of these elements to a program of 30 minutes or longer. Prerequisites: COM 2201, 3301.
New Course Description: Advanced study of the theoretical and practical aspects of television production. Students will be exposed to video field cameras, directing and producing elements to an individual or group project by semesters' end. Active participation in Mountaineer News will be required. Prerequisites: COM 2201, COM 3301.

7. Course Change Request – COM 3310

Purpose and Nature of Change:
To change course title and description to more accurately reflect current course content.
Old Course Title: Electronic Media Management
New Course Title: Media Sales and Management.
Old Course Description: This course presents current practices, problems and issues of electronic media management. Lectures, readings and class presentations provide an introduction to the business aspects of electronic media.
New Course Description: This course presents current practices, problems and issues of electronic media sales and management. Lectures, readings and class presentations provide an introduction to the business aspects of electronic media.

8. New Course Request – COM 3306

Purpose and Nature of Course:
To provide students in broadcasting an opportunity to develop more advanced skill in non-linear electronic media editing. Editors are increasingly in demand as the increase for more programming becomes necessitated by the increasing number of technological outlets for electronic media. It provides acts as a companion course and supplement to the three production courses currently offered.
Course Description: This course emphasizes post-production editing skills using advanced techniques taught with the Avid and Pro Tools software. Students will work under professional production teams in the areas of production development, advanced writing production and digital post-production. Students will be expected to complete a semester-long project utilizing the skills taught throughout the semester. Active participation in Mountaineer News will be required. Prerequisites: COM 2201, 3301, 3304, or by consent of instructor.
