1.        New Course: AAS 1100 Introduction to African American Studies

 

Purpose and Nature of Course:

This course provides an interdisciplinary overview of African American life and culture which all students may take as a way to better understand the role of black people in American society.  The course also serves as a comprehensive introduction to the field of African American Studies that prepares students for more specialized course work in the African American Studies Minor at Mansfield U.   ______

This introductory course provides a broad-based overview of African American life and

culture.  Through a variety of cross-disciplinary perspectives, including history, literature, philosophy, politics, socio-economics, and the Arts, students gain insights into the black experience as it relates to their individual lives, the country, and the larger world.

The African American Studies minor is housed in the English Department.  Existing personnel in that department will offer the course in lieu one of the several regularly scheduled special topics courses offered each semester.

2.        New Course: BI 3319 Aquatic Entomology

 

Purpose and Nature of Course: 

This course will provide information on aquatic insects that students in the Biology and Geography/Geology Departments will find of value when applying for jobs in the environmental sciences and to graduate programs.  The course has both lecture and laboratory components.  In lecture, students will learn about the biology and ecology of aquatic insects and in lab they will collect and identify aquatic insects to order, family and genus.  The course will focus on the aquatic insects of North America.

Course Description: 

The content of this course will cover the biology and ecology of the aquatic insects of North America.  The lab portion of the course will involve a number of collecting trips to local aquatic environments to study aquatic insects in the field.  Students will also collect insects for study and identification in the lab.  The course content will be taught as it relates to the study and analysis of aquatic insect communities as done by state and federal environmental agencies.

3.        Course Change Request for MAP 1112 Beginning Class Piano

 

Purpose and nature of change: 

Current course description does not accurately describe learning outcomes/ course prerequisites need to be clarified.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): This class is intended for the beginning piano student with no previous piano background.  Develops basic skills such as scales, reading bass and treble clefs simultaneously, simple chord progressions, ability to improvise harmonization patterns, and simple sight-reading.

 

4.        Course Change Request for MAP 1113 Class Piano I

 

Purpose and nature of change:

Current course description does not accurately describe learning outcomes/ course prerequisites need to be clarified.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Assumes completion of MAP 1112  or some level of previous piano training.  Further development of basic skills, expanding scale knowledge to include all major scales and white-note minors, including arpeggios and basic chord progressions.  Focus on improvising accompaniment patterns, learning basic repertoire quickly, and enhanced sight-reading skills.

5.        Course Change Request for MAP 1114 Class Piano II

 

Purpose and nature of change:

Current course description does not accurately describe learning outcomes/ course prerequisites need to be clarified.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Assumes completion of MAP 1113 or substantial previous piano training.  Includes a more in-depth focus on improvisation using more complex harmonic progressions.  Increases fluency of scales, chords and arpeggios, and develops students’ abilities to prepare and perform repertoire, and to further improve sight-reading skills.  The course culminates in the first piano proficiency.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Requires successful completion of the first piano proficiency.  Develops skills relevant to professional musicians.  These include transposition, sight-reading, reduction of difficult accompaniments, improvisation of accompaniments, accompanimental and coaching skills, and basic open-score reading.  Students also prepare solo repertoire and develop skills necessary to self-prepare likely repertoire.

7.        Course Change Request for MAP 1115 Advanced Piano Class

 

Purpose and nature of change:

Current course description does not accurately describe learning outcomes/ course prerequisites need to be clarified.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): Requires completion of the first piano proficiency and MU 3318.  Focuses on skills necessary for vocal track music education majors, including four-part open score reading, preparing multiple accompaniments simultaneously, reducing and transposing accompaniments to fit student needs, and sight-reading.  The course prepares students for the second piano proficiency, in which students perform multiple open-score excerpts, accompany solo vocalists, perform choral accompaniments, and sight-read both accompaniments and four-part open scores.

Purpose and Nature of Course: 

To increase the student’s knowledge of large group style and practice through the performance of traditional and modern jazz ensemble arrangements. The student will become aware of the role their part plays within each arrangement as well as gain a better understanding of jazz performance practice.   This course is currently offered using the experimental number MU 2255-02.

The Jazz Lab Band is intended to introduce the student to large ensemble jazz styles through the performance of traditional and modern arrangements.  The ensemble performs at least two concerts per year.  Membership is by audition.

11.    New Course Request for MEN 3352 – String Chamber Orchestra

 

Purpose and Nature of Course:   

This ensemble will offer string players the opportunity to study and perform the standard string orchestra repertory of the great masters, as well as to play and become acquainted with the large graded music education repertory. Weekly rehearsals will cover this repertory and prepare the ensemble for performances on and off campus. For music education  majors, it is the case that most public schools do not have a symphony orchestra program, just a string program. Future string teachers will need to know the string orchestra repertory thoroughly and have first-hand experience with the graded repertory lists.
