CURRICULAR ACTION NOTICE FOR MUSIC THEATRE MINOR (new)

(creates 4 new courses and deletes 5 existing courses)

1.      New Program: MUSIC THEATRE MINOR

Department_______Communication & Theatre______

1.       Rationale for program:  Despite the removal of a Theatre Major in our department, we continue to thrive with a minor in Theatre as well as through our Musical Theatre program in collaboration with the Department of Music.  One of the reasons for this growth in Musical Theatre is the strong program in Music Education offered by the University.  A Musical Theatre Minor will provide a strong component to the educational strengths as well as the marketability of our Music Ed. Graduates.  When combined with a degree in Music, The Musical Theatre Minor will prepare future teachers to organize and produce musical theatre performances at the middle and high school levels.  For students without a degree in Music, the interdisciplinary nature of the minor will provide a basic and practical study of musical theatre which will enable anyone with a passion for it to pursue it while realizing their particular major course of study.

2.       Program Description for Catalog:  The Minor offers students with a passion for Musical Theatre to gain valuable basic and practical knowledge in that field.  Through classroom study as well as participation in Musicals produced by the Departments of Communication & Theatre and of Music, students gain solid foundations valuable to various fields of study.

3.       Program Objectives:

Prepare future teachers to organize and produce musical theatre performances at the middle and high school levels.

Provide a basic and practical study of musical theatre which will enable anyone with a passion for it to pursue it while realizing their particular major course of study.
