CURRICULAR ACTION NOTICE FOR CHINESE LANGUAGE COURSES

(creates 2 new courses)

 

1.      New Course: CHN 1101: Introductory Chinese I

Department:  English and Modern Languages

Purpose and Nature of Course:   Introductory course in Chinese language (Mandarin).

Prefix: CHN        Number: 1101   CIP:  16.0301

Course Title: Introductory Chinese I

Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule), Maximum 20 spaces

I N T R O  C H I N E S E  I       (15 spaces)

Credits (Place number of credits beside appropriate types)

Credit(s)    Undergraduate                      

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):

For students with little or no prior experience in Chinese (Mandarin) language.   Skills are taught within a cultural context and include pronunciation, speaking, and listening comprehension skills, as well as an introduction to the Chinese writing system.  Prerequisites: (Courses which MUST be completed prior to taking this course) None

How will increased offerings be staffed?

Courses to be staffed by visiting exchange faculty from China.

Estimated Frequency of Offering:  Fall semesters (depending on availability of exchange

 faculty)

The proposed course is an introduction to Chinese language.  All Modern Languages courses currently count toward Group 2: Languages and Literature in the General Education Program.  A course in Chinese language, like other language courses, fulfills the stated outcomes of the Global Awareness requirement.

Department:  English and Modern Languages

Purpose and Nature of Course:   Introductory course (second semester) in Chinese language

(Mandarin).

Prefix: CHN        Number: 1102   CIP: 16.0301

Course Title: Introductory Chinese II

Abbreviated Title (for Master Schedule), Maximum 20 spaces

I N T R O  C H I N E S E  I I       (16 spaces)

Credits (Place number of credits beside appropriate types)

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences):

Continuation of Chinese 1101.

Prerequisites: (Courses which MUST be completed prior to taking this course) CHN 1101 or

equivalent
