1.      COURSE CHANGE: ARE 4440: Art in the Community/Art Education Field Experience

 

Purpose and nature of change:  The new Chapter 49 per-clinical field experience requirements for certification candidates has recently been raised to 190 hours before student teaching may begin.  To accommodate the span of pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade field experience needed, the Art Department is changing the name and adding ARE 4440 to the professional block of the Art Education program to raise the number of pre-clinical field experience hours.

Course Description for Catalog (limit to four sentences): The course engages students in participating as an art educational aide in one or more of the following settings: pre-schools, K-12 art classrooms, after-school programs, museums, and/or residential treatment centers. Learner activities will include observation of art education programs, studio and critical response activities, and the design of curriculum plans and instructional materials appropriate for the individual settings. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the placements.

2.      NEW COURSE: ART 2200: Foundations in New Media

Purpose and Nature of Course:  The depARTment needs to add a foundation course in the use of electronic art hardware, software, methodologies, and techniques to be taken before upper level Digital or Graphic Design coursework.  Too much time is being spent in upper level classes trying to bring everyone up to a comparable level of competency, making learning assignments difficult to construct with sufficient creative challenge for all students.
