Guide for the Midterm


  1. What are the rules for dividing a word into syllables? How do you find the naturally accented syllable of a word?
  2. Can you remember all of the question words and also use them to answer or generate questions?
  3. Can you think of 5 “survival sentences” to use in class and another 5 to use while traveling in Latin America?
  4. How many –AR ,-IR, ER verbs do you recall from Spa 1101 and Spa1102?  Have you studied them as vocabulary and also in all of their “conjugations”?
  5. Have you studied all your vocabulary (family, weather expressions, personality, holidays, and fiesta vocabulary)?
  6. Did you review the use of the direct and indirect object pronouns?  Can you write a sentence using just the DOP, just the IOP, and finally one using both?  What do you need to know about “compound sentences” and the object pronouns?
  7. What happens to sentence structure when we use “backwards verbs” like gustar?  How many indirect object pronouns can you use with these verbs?  Have you studied all of the “backwards verbs”?
  8. Have you studied your stem-changing verbs (even those on p. 268)?
  9. Have you reviewed the GO verbs?
  10. Can you recall all the "tener" idiomatic expressions?
  11. Can you create sentences using the "tener +que" and "ir + a" structures?
  12. Are you placing and forming your adjectives correctly (number and gender agreement)?
  13. Are you able to conjugate regular AR, ER, and IR verbs in the preterit?  Which regular verbs undergo spelling changes to preserve their original sounds?
  14. Do you know how to determine which stem-changing verbs have stem changes in the preterit?  When and how do they stem change? 
  15. What are the three irregular preterit verbs and their verb forms?
  16. How many semi-irregular preterit verbs are there?  Did you come up with a system to remember their new stems?  What is the “zig-zag” method?
